Choose who will care for your pet while the doors are open and furniture is being carried. Then prepare the animal’s journey, supplies and first space in the new home separately from the household shipment.

Check the destination
For a move between states, use the destination’s current animal-entry rules. Requirements can include health documents or vaccinations; they are not identical across all states.

Confirm pet rules at the new home and any overnight stop. Ask about the actual species, size or number of animals you are bringing rather than assuming “pet friendly” covers every situation.

Pack for the trip and the first day
Daily care
Bring the pet’s normal food, drinking water, bowls and required medication. Add the supplies needed for cleaning, toilet breaks or a litter tray.
Identification and records
Carry veterinary information and current contact details. Check that the identification tag and microchip registration information are up to date.
Familiar equipment
Keep the suitable carrier, harness or leash accessible. Bring familiar bedding or another appropriate comfort item, with enough spare supplies for a delay.
While the doors are open
Arrange care away from the carry route
A moving home has unfamiliar people, open entrances and furniture in motion. If practical, arrange for a trusted person to care for the pet elsewhere during the busiest part of the day. Otherwise, choose an appropriate supervised space that the crew does not need to enter and explain the plan before loading.
Put the carrier and essentials bag aside before the household cartons are collected. Tell everyone which doors must stay closed and which adult is responsible for the animal. A sign on a room can support that conversation, but it does not replace supervision or suitable containment.
If a room reserved for the pet contains furniture that must be moved, agree on the sequence in advance. Clear it first or arrange another suitable place; do not leave the crew to discover the conflict while carrying a large item.
On the road
Use a transport plan suited to the animal
Secure the pet appropriately
Cats should travel in a suitable carrier; dogs need an appropriate restraint or carrier. Keep pets out of the driver’s lap and do not let them ride with their heads outside the window.
Plan attended stops
Arrange breaks and access to water appropriate to the animal and veterinary advice. Never leave a pet unattended in a parked vehicle.
Check carriers and connections
Use equipment according to its instructions, including how it is secured in the vehicle. Give the animal time to become familiar with the carrier before travel.

At the new home
Prepare a supervised area before letting the pet explore
Check the space
Before bringing the animal in, check doors, windows, gaps, loose packing materials and other immediate hazards. Keep the pet away from active unloading.
Unpack the care supplies
Set up water, suitable bedding and the required feeding or toilet area. Keep the carrier or restraint available while access is still being managed.
Introduce the home gradually
Allow the pet to settle under supervision. Keep care routines as consistent as practical and ask your veterinarian about behavior or health concerns.
Finish the practical updates
Confirm local veterinary care and update the relevant address and contact records. Check any local licensing requirements that apply to the animal.

Explain that an animal will be present, identify the supervised area and say which door needs to remain closed. If the household is leaving before the shipment, agree who can provide access and receive the belongings. Keep veterinary documents and other personal records with you.
For a long-distance move, compare the household’s travel schedule with the shipment’s delivery arrangement. Make sure your pet’s care, food and suitable accommodation do not depend on a particular carton arriving first.

Can my cat or dog ride in the moving truck with the furniture?
No animal should travel in the cargo load. Arrange suitable transport with the household or a qualified pet transport provider.
Should I stop giving my pet water before the trip?
Do not follow a blanket rule to withhold water. Ask your veterinarian about feeding, hydration and any travel concerns for your pet.
Do all interstate moves require the same pet paperwork?
No. Check the receiving state’s current requirements and consult your veterinarian early enough to complete what is required.
What if my pet is distressed after the move?
Keep the animal appropriately supervised and contact your veterinarian for advice, especially if there are health concerns. There is no guaranteed adjustment timetable.
