Have these ready before moving day

Finish the moving list

Include the rooms you use every day and the things in closets, the basement or garage. Mark what is staying behind. Tell Milvus about additions or extra stops before the appointment so the agreed inventory still describes the work.

Clear the route through the home

Move loose objects out of the hallways and identify the furniture that needs preparation. Keep finished cartons to one side of the walking route. If a stair turn or doorway looks difficult, send a photo before moving day.

Have access ready at both addresses

Keep the keys, building contact and agreed loading instructions available. If you booked a service elevator, make sure its appointment matches the moving arrangement. Decide who will receive the furniture and show the crew which rooms to use.

How much of the move would you like us to handle?

You do not have to choose between doing everything yourself and having every room packed for you. Milvus can discuss the work you want help with and build the estimate around it.

Move the furniture and packed boxes

For a household that is already packed, the service centers on preparing the agreed furniture, loading, transport and unloading. List the furniture and cartons, and point out anything that needs dismantling. Share access at both homes so the crew can be planned around the full job.

Pack selected rooms or the whole home

Choose the areas you want Milvus to prepare: a kitchen, fragile household items or all the rooms. Describe what remains unpacked and what you will do yourself. Packing labor, supplies and any special preparation should be clear in the estimate before the appointment.

Move now and deliver after a gap

If leases, closings or renovation dates do not overlap, include storage and later delivery in the request. Separate anything you need during the gap from the stored shipment. Compare the pickup, storage period and redelivery together, rather than using the monthly storage price as the whole budget.

Local moving hourly rates

The rate depends on your date and crew size. Each two-, three- or four-mover package below includes one truck. Additional movers and trucks have separate hourly rates.

Local moving hourly rates
Date category2 movers + truck3 movers + truck4 movers + truckExtra moverExtra truck
Discount$110/hr$160/hr$210/hr$55/hr$55/hr
Regular$120/hr$170/hr$220/hr$65/hr$65/hr
Subpeak$150/hr$200/hr$250/hr$65/hr$65/hr
Peak$180/hr$230/hr$280/hr$65/hr$65/hr
Highpeak$260/hr$360/hr$460/hr$75/hr$75/hr

Discount, Regular, Subpeak, Peak and Highpeak are date categories. Ask which applies to your move. Minimum hours, billable travel, materials and additional services must be confirmed in your estimate.

Before booking, have the date category, billable time and any minimum explained in the estimate. Add the packing materials, extra services and access arrangements to the same written scope. That is the amount of work you are comparing, rather than an hourly figure on its own.

A local move starts at the front door

A short drive can still mean a substantial move. In a third-floor apartment, the stair carry may matter more than the mileage; in a larger building, a shared elevator may set the pace. Describe the route from the rooms to the truck at both homes.

Milvus handles local household moves in Boston and the surrounding Massachusetts communities. We can help with packing, furniture handling and moves involving storage. If your address is outside Massachusetts, use the long-distance moving page so the estimate follows the right scope.

In a shared apartment, mark what belongs to you and what stays. That includes roommates' furniture and the landlord's appliances. Sorting it out before loading avoids discovering that someone else's item has reached your new home.

Packing, furniture and the rooms beyond the inventory

You can pack your own cartons and have Milvus handle the move, or request packing for part or all of the home. Point out items that need special preparation: a glass dining table, a tall bookcase that must turn on a landing, or a bed that needs to come apart.

Include the spaces outside the main rooms: an attic, garage, patio, basement locker or storage cage. A quote based only on bedrooms can leave a sizeable part of the load uncounted.

  • Send photos of narrow stairs, low ceilings and difficult entrances.
  • Tell us the elevator reservation hours and where the loading entrance is.
  • Identify fragile or unusually heavy pieces before the move date.
  • Keep a small collection of first-night essentials out of the moving boxes.

Reserve access, then finish packing

Ask the building manager about moving hours, elevator bookings and insurance paperwork. Check the parking situation early enough to make a workable loading plan. Boston offers moving truck parking permits; its official instructions explain the application and sign-posting process.

Agree who arranges any permit and who will provide access at each address. By moving day, close the packed cartons, label their receiving rooms and clear the route through the apartment. If the key handover changes, call before the crew sets out.

The details that matter

A crew recommendation needs more than the bedroom count

Two apartments with the same number of bedrooms can need quite different work. One may have an elevator, finished cartons and a short carry; the other may include three flights of stairs, a large sofa and a basement full of boxes. Share those differences when asking Milvus to recommend the crew. More movers change the hourly rate, but the suitable team depends on the load and access.

For a useful comparison, give every company the same inventory and requested service. Check the applicable date category, minimum billable time, how travel is charged, furniture preparation, packing materials, extra stops and any other charges. The published Milvus table gives the hourly rates; your estimate needs to explain how those rates and the agreed services apply to the move.

Local moving questions

How many movers should I request?

Start with the inventory and access. Two movers may suit a small move; a larger household or complex loading arrangement may benefit from a bigger crew. Ask Milvus to match the crew to the work instead of choosing by hourly price alone.

Are stairs, travel time and packing included?

Describe your stairs and the services you want when asking for an estimate. Have Milvus identify how travel time, materials and any additional work are charged. The table lists hourly rates, not every term of an individual move.

How can I keep the move within my budget?

Reduce the inventory before quoting, finish the packing you agreed to do and have access arranged at both homes. Compare the full estimated scope, including date category and billable time, when choosing between quotes.

What happens after I start a quote?

The date and ZIP codes begin the request. The next useful details are the inventory, floors, stairs or elevator, loading access and packing needs. Review the proposed scope and terms with Milvus before treating the move as booked.

Can you move belongings to my own storage unit?

Include the storage address, access hours, unit location and any elevator or loading instructions. Explain whether the whole shipment or only some items are going there. A storage-unit stop needs to be part of the moving quote.

How do I know which hourly category applies?

Ask Milvus to identify the category for your requested date in the estimate. Discount, Regular, Subpeak, Peak and Highpeak are different rates. Do not assume that the lowest advertised rate applies to every day.

Can you include furniture preparation and reassembly?

List the pieces and describe what needs to come apart. Milvus can review the requested work and include the agreed preparation and reassembly in the scope. Unusual furniture, existing damage or missing fittings should be discussed before moving day.
