Staircase and clear hallway beside furniture prepared for a move
Milvus Moving · Moving questions

Do movers charge extra for stairs?

Tell Milvus about the stairs at both addresses before the move is priced. Confirm whether a separate stair charge applies; on an hourly move, the extra carrying time can also affect the labor total.

  • Flights and landing turns
  • Access at both addresses
  • Heavy or oversized furniture
Describe the actual routeA floor number alone does not explain the carry.
Access details

Show the route from the truck to the room

  • Outdoor and indoor steps

Include front stoops, basement stairs and steps between the truck and entrance, as well as the apartment’s floor.

  • Turns and landings

Photograph the staircase from both ends and the tightest landing. Measure the doorway and turning space for your largest pieces.

  • An elevator that may not solve access

Confirm its internal dimensions, door width and reserved hours. A working elevator does not guarantee a sofa will fit.

  • The destination too

Send the same information for delivery. Include the final room if the furniture is going upstairs inside the new home.

The estimate

Time, handling and fees are separate questions

QuestionWhy it matters
Is the move hourly?Additional carrying time may affect the labor total, even without a separate stair fee.
Is the move quoted at a fixed price? The described access should be included in the quoted scope. Undisclosed stairs can change the work.
Does an item need preparation?Disassembly, unusual weight or a tight turn may require a different crew or handling plan.
Is there a separate stair charge?Ask Milvus to identify any applicable charge in the written estimate rather than assuming one from the floor number.
Prepare the route

Clear space helps; carrying the furniture yourself is not a requirement

Keep stairs, landings and entrances free of loose boxes and shoes. Arrange access with the building, and tell Milvus if another move or construction may block the route.

Leave difficult lifting to the agreed moving crew. Do not detach railings, force furniture through a turn or carry heavy pieces down stairs to try to avoid a possible charge. Discuss a safe handling plan before moving day.

Two different moves

The same apartment floor can mean different work

A second-floor apartment with a wide stair

The inventory may fit through a direct route, with a short carry from the truck.

A second-floor apartment behind a narrow turn

A large sofa or cabinet may need measurements, disassembly or another handling decision. The floor number is the same; the access is not.

Questions before you book

A few more details

Have a different situation? Call 857-895-8955 and talk it through with Milvus.

Can you give a stair charge from my floor number?

Milvus needs the complete access and inventory to quote the work. Share flights, turns, outdoor steps and oversized items, then confirm whether a separate charge applies.

What if the elevator is unavailable on moving day?

Contact Milvus as soon as you know. Using stairs may change the time, equipment or feasibility of the move, so review the revised plan before proceeding.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Clear photos of entrances, stairs and landings can help explain the route. Include dimensions when a large item may be a tight fit.
